Like many of my stories, this story seems to deal with the compromises and follies of love and friendship." David believes that, because dogs are such an integral part of so many people's lives "they make an excellent metaphor for a story about independence and love. You can definitely see the seed for the book in this drawing, which is shown at the left. In an "author's note" sent to reviewers, David notes that he was inspired to write the book because of a drawing he did some time ago. He's in charge, all right, and don't you forget it! Any parent of a stubbornly independent preschooler (and isn't it their job to be stubbornly independent?) will draw some instant parallels - and laughs - from that cover pose.

Just look at the cover illustration, showing a dog literally standing two of his own feet and leaning confidently against a fire hydrant. Kids will readily identify with the dog's idea of taking control of his own life, and they'll love the energy and humor in David's expressive watercolor illustrations. But when the woman and Beaky have a fight over an offensive business arrangement (chicken-pulled coach service, anyone?), chaos ensues.David has just released his newest picture book, I'm My Own Dog, and it's a doozy. Luckily, he spots a lovely duo having lunch: a woman and a chicken named Beaky Barnes. The problem? The town is entirely out of eggs, and the local chef is panicked. But with a hungry inspector, a desperate chef, and an entrepreneurial woman on her tail, Beaky has to use every tool in her chicken coop to make her grand escape.Īll the inspector wanted was an egg to go in his sandwich, so he heads to the cafe. He lives in Kew Gardens, New York, with wife, Miriam, and their son, Sam.Ĭaldecott Honor winner David Ezra Stein takes readers on a slapstick journey in his debut graphic novel series, featuring Beaky Barnes, a no-nonsense chicken who’s determined to save her desirable egg.
